Ellen disguised herself as a man with a bandaged face whilst William posed as her servant. Travelling by train with Ellen in first class, they reached temporary safety in the north. To flee bounty hunters, they continued their journey to Britain where they campaigned for the abolition of slavery, even staging a protest against America at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Very recently, a blue plaque bearing their names has been added to a house in Hammersmith, but few artefacts exist that record and commemorate their lives.
